Married to Another: Finding True Life in Christ

Share

Imagine, for a moment, that you are trapped in a miserable marriage.

The relationship has become a prison of constant condemnation. Every single morning, your spouse hands you a checklist of impossible expectations. If you fail to perfectly measure up, they are quick to point it out, reminding you of your flaws and holding your failures over your head like a debt that can never be paid.

You live in constant fear, walking on eggshells, trying to satisfy a spouse who is never satisfied. The harder you try to please them, the more exhausted and dead inside you feel.

For most of your life, this was your spiritual reality. This demanding spouse? It was the Law…

The only escape from such a relationship is through a death and a new marriage. This is the story of the gospel.

Paul tells us, “You also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead” (Rom. 7:4).

Free from Condemnation

When Jesus went to the cross, he died to end your marriage to your old, condemning master. The debt hung over you is now paid in full. Because Christ bore the full weight of the Law’s curse, its legal claim on your life has been permanently canceled. You no longer have to worry about atoning for your past or earning your future; the old husband, the one who demanded perfection as the price of admission, no longer holding authority over you.

Yet, freedom from condemnation is only the first blessing that comes from dying to the Law with Christ.

Free from the Vicious Cycle of the Law

In the old marriage, our natural sinfulness caused the Law to do more than condemn us for breaking it, the Law also provoked our rebellion. Have you ever noticed how telling a child “don’t touch the electrical outlet” makes them want to touch it even more? The human heart harbours a brokenness that naturally rebels against rules. Because rules threaten our desire to be our own masters whenever we are commanded, our rebellion is triggered.

This is the tragic trap of trying to live under the Law. On its own, a rule cannot change us. Instead, our brokenness hijacks the rule, using it to stir up even more rebellion, shame, and failure. We found ourselves in a deadly vicious cycle where the very rules meant to show us right from wrong end up producing despair and death.

But to die with Christ means this cycle is finally broken. You are not trapped in this suffocating relationship. Your marriage to the Law ended the moment you died with Christ.

Married to Christ

You are now married to the resurrected Christ. This new relationship is entirely different, bringing with it a new freedom. It is not freedom to do whatever you want; rather, it is the freedom to be loved by the only One who can truly satisfy your heart. This new husband, Jesus, is not a demanding master standing over you with a checklist. He is a life-giving husband who took your ugliness, sin, and shame down into death to bury it forever, sharing with you his own life and perfect righteousness, making you beautiful in his sight and calling you his very own.

Not only that, but through his Spirit, your relationship to the Law has been transformed. The same commandments once carved on tablets of stone which our sinful heart used as an occasion for rebellion, are now being written upon your heart by the Spirit of God. The Law could only demand from the outside, but the Spirit transforms from within. What was once an external demand is now an internal delight. By grace, what God commands is increasingly what you love.

This is the beauty of the gospel. Because you are united to Jesus, obedience is no longer a way to gain his love; it is the natural fruit of already being loved. You don’t serve God to avoid the courtroom; you serve him because you are living in your Father’s home. This service flows naturally out of love, guaranteed by the Holy Spirit who has written God’s desires onto your heart.

When you wake up today, look to Christ. The heavy burden of the old life has been replaced by his light yoke of grace. You are no longer a slave to a list of rules that leads to death; you are the beloved bride of the One who rose from the dead to walk with you in the newness of the Spirit. Resting in his arms, you discover that obeying God’s heart is no longer a crushing burden. As you behold the sheer loveliness of your Savior, walking with him becomes your greatest delight.
