“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10:5
Our every action and word begins with a thought. When entertained and welcomed, a thought quickly becomes a belief. Yet, there is a particular kind of moment right before a lie becomes a belief: it slips back into your mind, uninvited, whispering until it feels like truth. You begin to believe that you are a failure. That you are beyond help. That you are letting down everyone around you. “You are not enough, and you never will be.” What began as a thought, a belief, is now a captor.
This is the battle Paul describes in 2 Corinthians. The real fight is not merely the moment you commit an outward sin, but the moment before it: the deceptive thought process that presents your situation as hopeless under the watch of an uninterested God.
“Take every thought captive,” Paul writes. The word means to seize a prisoner of war and bring him back before he manages to sabotage you from within. Paul is commanding us to war with our thought captors.
Our minds, like the rest of our being, are never neutral. They are always ruled by whatever holds our affections captive. Paul urges us to rescue our minds from the grip of our own flesh and the world, bringing them instead to the joyful submission of Christ. Our God is no taskmaster; he is the altogether lovely Savior and Bridegroom; the Son of the Father, who invites you into his care. He is the Lord whose yoke is easy and whose burden is light, offering rest not the rack.
How do you take a thought captive?
Try it today, or the next time that thought walks in and settles into your psyche. Don’t give it more attention than it deserves. Instead, turn away from it to Christ. The One who has demonstrated his love by bearing your every sin, every shame, and every mistake. He knows your every thought, yet he still loves you and desires to reshape those thoughts into acts of worship. Say it out loud if you have to: “Jesus, I am giving you this thought. I will wait for your instructions and obey.”
Here is the strange paradox of spiritual warfare: the battlefield is also the bridal chamber. The very place the enemy tries to plant a lie about God’s character is the very place Christ demonstrates his presence, power, and peace. This thought war is the secret chamber where we can truly “taste and see that the Lord is good” (Ps. 34:8).
Today, do not merely manage your mind. Drive your mind continually back to the One who made it and whose beauty alone can truly satisfy it. To love God with all your mind and strength, is to let your mind and heart be captivated by him.
