At the end of his life, Daniel Rowland (1711–1790) described himself as “a poor sinner … depending entirely on the merits of a crucified Saviour.” He preached for decades in a quiet corner of Wales and left few papers behind. Yet his impact was anything but small.

Celebrated by figures such as J. C. Ryle, Howel Harris, and Lady Huntingdon—some placing him second only to Paul or Whitefield—Rowland became a central voice in the Welsh Awakening. For 55 years, he urged hearers toward Christ. No wonder Dr. Martyn Lloyd‑Jones turned to the eighteenth century—and often to Rowland himself—whenever he sought spiritual renewal.

These six edited sermons bring Rowland’s fervent, Christ‑exalting ministry to life once more. Readers will hear his gospel clarity, feel his pastoral warmth, and—God willing—experience “the Lord come down” as they read.

Endorsements

“For over half a century and throughout the Welsh Methodist revival, Daniel Rowland’s experiential preaching combined the tenderness of John Flavel, the passionate pleading of Charles Spurgeon, the word-by-word precision of Jonathan Edwards, and the evangelistic and Christ-centered thrust of all three. There is much in these six sermons for the weary saint, the afflicted saint, and the doubting saint, for both the hardened sinner and the seeking sinner. Drink deeply from these refreshing wells!”

“When we think of awakenings, our minds go to household names such as Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield. Yet in Wales, around the same time, many walked as far as sixty miles to hear Daniel Rowland, a preacher moved by a passionate love for God’s truth and a burning desire to spread the good news of the gospel. This collection of his sermons, each based on a single verse, communicates the same passion, encouraging modern readers to reflect carefully, unhurriedly, and gratefully on the riches of God’s Word.”

“Dr. J. I. Packer once described the sermons of Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones on Romans 6 as ‘all hwyl and head,’ ‘a paean of proclamation and praise.’ He might equally well have said the same thing about these sermons of Daniel Rowlands. They feed the mind, warm the heart, and stir the will. I am delighted that they are now widely available and am pleased to be able to commend them warmly.”

Andrew Davies
Welsh pastor and lecturer

“The great hymnwriter William Williams Pantycelyn said that his friend Daniel Rowland preached ‘with gospel charm; he proclaimed divine salvation, full, complete, sufficient, free, through the death of the Messiah, once forever on the Tree.’ Rowland had been encouraged to apply the balm of Gilead in his preaching, and he did so lavishly. This collection of his sermons, sensitively translated and presented, is a wonderful introduction to this glorious preacher.”
